Under the looming threat of total lockdown (it hasn’t happened as of this post, thankfully), Matt and I decided it would be fun to take a trip to Naples while we still can. We wanted to go to Christmas Alley for Neopolitan gifts, and see about finding all the street food, too, of course. It’s crazy how empty the streets are right now compared to normal, but strangely crazy how busy they are compared to what they *should* be right now. There were far too many mask-less twenty-somethings gathering in large groups. At 6pm, all the restaurants close and most of the shops as well. Some food shops stay open for take-out, which was great for us because rather than closing at 3pm and re-opening at 7:30pm, they just stay open and start take-out at 6pm—- this means we can get food WHEN WE ARE HUNGRY! It’s amazing! Although it is surreal to be in this city when it is so empty, I am grateful for the chance to see it in a new way. I could really SEE the buildings and plants, the art and graffiti, the storefronts and alleys without the swarms of people. And, or course, Naples is so good at feeding us….
