sperlonga, sabaudia and circeo national park

Apr 24, 2019

For our Easter three-day weekend, we drove up the coast about 2 hours north to the region of Lazio.  We spent an afternoon in the cute beach town of Sperlonga, then made it to our apartment in Sabaudia for the rest of the weekend.  Sabaudia is in the heart of Circeo National Park (established in 1934, Circeo National Park was created to protect different species and a rich mosaic of environments. A promontory, an island, over 20 km of dunes overlooking the sea, four coastal lakes, over 3000 hectares of forest, hundreds of animals and plant species, the historical towns of Sabaudia and San Felice, and wonders such as the Villa of Domitian and the hamlet of Fogliano), where we explored the park’s nature museum, walked in its forests, drove along its four lakes, sat on its seashore next to its stretching dunes, and watched our kids play in the ocean.  The town was clean, calm, and full of tasty treats!  We enjoyed the fresh air, the fragrant flowers, the beautiful warm weather, and the time away.  Matt and I loved that our apartment was right downtown, and we spent time leisurely walking to find morsels at little grocery stores, pastry shops, and the vegetable market.  With our kids being adolescents now, the emotions and frustrations can get intense… so for me it wasn’t the perfectly relaxed walk-on-the-beach-holding-Matt’s-hand-in-silence-while-drinking-cocktails trip, but it was nice to get outside and see so much beauty together.
